Liver spots, commonly called age spots, are brown, tan, or black oval-shaped spots on skin. They’re completely flat and painless, and they usually appear on the face, shoulders, forearms, and other areas of the body that experience the most sun exposure. Despite their name, they’re not at all related to liver function.
What causes age spots?
Age spots are a form of hyperpigmentation primarily caused by UV exposure from the sun or tanning beds. The UV light stimulates the production of melanin, which is what gives skin its pigment. Over years of sun exposure, this melanin can collect and clump together within the skin, creating dark spots. They’re most common in fair-skinned people and redheads.
The best prevention for liver spots is to be diligent about your sun protection. Avoid the sun, particularly in the middle of the day (which is when rays are at their strongest) and apply a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher year-round.
