What is Melasma?

A form of hyperpigmentation (excess pigment in the skin), melasma shows up as flat, irregularly shaped brown or gray patches on the forehead, cheeks, nose, and upper lip.

Also known as chloasma, melasma can be epidermal (on the skin’s surface), dermal (under the surface of the skin), or both. Hyperpigmentation that’s deeper in the skin is more difficult to treat.

People with dark skin are more likely to develop melasma because their skin has more melanin-producing cells (called melanocytes).

What causes melasma?

Unlike post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is caused by injury or irritation (like acne, eczema, or bug bites), melasma is typically triggered by hormone changes, thyroid disease, or stress—internal factors that can’t be easily avoided.

Often called “the mask of pregnancy,” melasma is especially common in women during pregnancy, when estrogen and progesterone overstimulate melanin production. Birth control pills and hormone replacement therapies can trigger it as well.

Its marks vary in size and shape, often showing up as large patches that span the area where they appear, such as the “melasma mustache” across the length of the upper lip.

Sun can both bring on melasma and worsen existing patches, since UV light speeds up melanin production. Sun exposure will immediately ramp up the pigment production if you aren’t protected with a full-spectrum sunscreen.
